Protein: Do You Know What’s On Your Plate?

Whether you’re an omnivore, vegetarian, vegan, or pegan (paleo-vegan), protein is essential for your optimal health and wellness. Protein builds muscle, gives you energy, and keeps your blood sugar stable!

Sounds good, right?

While the promise of protein is great, there’s a lot that can go wrong when it comes to protein intake. Where and how you get your protein matters, and this article will explore that – and a whole lot more.

Let’s dive in.

What is Protein?

All living things are made of protein, whether viruses, bacteria, hummingbirds, trees, flowers, or humans. Proteins are made up of organic compounds called amino acids. And just like fat and carbohydrate, protein is a macronutrient in the human body, meaning you need a lot of it.

Your larger physical structures, like hair, muscles, nails, and tendons, are made of protein. Antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and neurotransmitters are examples of some types of protein. They work tirelessly behind the scenes, regulating the form and function of your tissues and organs. Every cell in your body either uses or is some form of protein.
